For 34 years Laura Walters, a member of Rotary, has been walking in Project Bread's Walk For Hunger! This year she is walking on behalf of the Brookline Food Pantry, specifically Brookline Thrives.

Since 2020, Laura and her husband Jake, also a Rotary member, have been committed volunteers at Brookline Thrives as weekly shift leaders.  In her own words, "we love the camaraderie and know our work is important to the 500 Brookline public school students who receive the weekend food bags.  I see it as part of Brookline Rotary’s commitment to alleviate food insecurity." For more information, click Brookline Thrives.

This year the Brookline Food Pantry has teamed up with the Friends of Brookline Public Health to organize a team for the 2024 Walk For Hunger. The walk consists of a 5K walk around Boston Common on May 5th to take "strides towards a hunger free MA", and proceeds from Laura and the team's efforts will go to Brookline Thrives!

Join in this creative, fun service project continuing only until June 7th!

2 volunteers are needed each week: one to do the grocery shopping and deliver the items to the Teen Center on Thursday/Friday, and another to help set-up, assist in cooking, and then clean-up. To volunteer, click the Healthy Cooking button on the "Coming Soon" above section on this website

In partnership with BU Occupational Therapy doctoral students & those in Nutrition, the Rotary District Grant supports a weekly cooking class on Friday afternoons from 3 to 5 pm.  Volunteers will work with Teen Center middle schoolers and high schoolers to cook a vegetarian, low-cost, healthy entree and dessert.  BU professor and Rotarian Karen Jacobs will work with Teen Center members to create the menu, and BU OT doctoral students will lead the classes. Further questions? contact Susan Rack, Service Projects Chair.

In May the Project will transition to its final phase when local restaurants will provide a variety of meals and engage with students.

Consistent with the Town of Brookline's and Rotary's commitment to minimize our negative impact on the planet, Brookline Rotary has created the following policies to guide our actions for all meetings and events:

  • Avoid the use and sale of single use water bottles
  • Use compostable products or reusable china/glass/ flatware when serving food
  • Separate trash, recyclables and reusables at clean-up
  • Minimize the amount of paper used
  • Ensure that all necessary print materials are on recyclable paper
  • Use QR codes, whenever possible, referring people to electronic information instead of print material

RYLA (which began in 1994) is an opportunity for approximately 200 high school sophomores sponsored by 50 Rotary Clubs to come together for a weekend of challenging and enriching activities to cultivate fellowship and learn skills.

RYLA is an incredible 3-day conference for high school sophomores to be held June 21-23 at Fitchburg State University. Our Brookline Rotary Club has sponsored 4 students and will join students from around the 7910 District.

Come out to volunteer and see what it's all about. Come for an hour or more at any point during the three day weekend. Register to volunteer at https://ryla7910.org/get-involved/
